Wine Types
You can buy wine
based on its style, aromas, flavours, and tasting notes. Wine bottle labels usually provide the grape name, and a general description of the wines style. By reading the
liquor store counter labels and tasting notes online you can learn more about a particular wines character.
There are many different types of wine. Red, White, and Sparkling are the most common types of wine. Common white wines can include Sparkling, Champagne,
Moscato, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Riesling.
Red wines can include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Malbec, Gamay, and Grenache.
There are also Fortified and Dessert Wines. Dessert wines are usually quite sweet, and fortified wines usually have a spirit added to them like whisky or rye.
White wines usually have sparkling types; whereas red wines have less sparklings. Their are also Rose Wines, many of which are sparkling.
Wine Style
A wine style can include its type of body and its sweetness. Typical bodies are Rich, Smooth, Medium, Bold, Light, Fruity, Crisp, and of course Sparkling. Sweetness can include:
Brut(XDry), Dry, Semi Dry, Semi Sweet, Sweet, Xtra Sweet. Sweet and xtra sweet wines are usually found in dessert wines, and Late Harvest wines.
Blending Grapes
Within white and red wine types, you can have many blended wines. A good example of this is Sparkling wine; as many are made from a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes.
Grapes are blended most often to add flavour and to give a wine a more unique taste, which may not have been possible with just a single grape variety.
Another good example is Bordeaux red wines from France. They are always blended with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet franc, or both, and also sometimes with Malbec. Merlot is
usually the larger percentage of wine grape, like 70%.
A wine bottle label or store label may not always say if a wine is blended, but online wine websites can usually provide additional
information. The reason why they don't always name all the blend types is that often one of blend grapes may only be a small percentage of the wines overall blend, and
winemakers are not required by law to list all the smaller percentage blends.
Wine Drinking Temperature
Drinking wine at the proper temperature is imperative to tasting the best of your wines tannins, aromas, and flavours. Generally speaking, red wines are served at almost room
temperature, white wines at fridge temperature, and sparkling wines and champagne are served ice cold.
