Sauvignon Blanc Wines
Wine Types
Sauvignon Blanc is made from green grapes. The Sauvignon Blanc grape are planted in many popular wine regions of the world, and it is the most planted grape in New Zealand.
Flavours-Aromas
Sauvignon Blanc is not oaked as often as Chardonnay wine, and it is a unique wine because of it's herbaceous nature. It can have flavours of lime, passion fruit,
peach, gooseberry, pepper. A less ripe Sauvignon grape has lime flavour while a more ripe Sauvignon has flavours of peach. Passion fruit is a flavour in between lime and peach.
Oaked Sauvignon Blanc can add flavours of vanilla, pie crust, dill, coconut, butter, nutmeg, and cream.
The acidity is medium to medium high, whereas in Chardonnay, it is low to medium high.
The best Sauvignon Blanc is found in New Zealand, North Coast California, and the Sancerre and Pouilly Fume regions of Loire
Valley in France. Good and cheap priced Sauvignon Blanc are found in Chile and Pay D'Or region of France, and wine areas of Australia.
Buying Sauvignon Blanc
Most wine stores have Sauvignon Blanc from Old and New Winemaking regions. New regions include New Zealand(Hawkes Bay, Marlborough), USA(Sonoma and Napa Valley, California), South Africa,
Chile, and Australia. France, Spain, Italy, are considered the older regions.
The bottle label may not say if it is oaked or unoaked, nor the store counter label, however,
the
Flavours and
Aromas stated on the store label is a good indicator if the wine is oaked. For Sauvignon Blanc, the oaked flavours and
aromas could be stated as, example: vanilla, pie crust, or nutmeg.
If the store label only lists fruit flavours, example: lime, passion fruit, peach; then likely the Sauvignon Blanc is not oaked.
However, if the store label lists fruits, and some of the oaked flavours, examples: gooseberry, vanilla, cream or as: lime, gooseberry, pie crust, then
the Sauvignon Blanc is most likely had some oak aging. The wine's oak aged time, is usually not stated on the wine bottle, but you can get this information from
the winemakers website. Generally speaking, pricier selections of oaked wines usually have more aging time.
Some online wine-buying websites may also have a wine's oak aging info; LCBO.com, Mynslc.com, AstorWines.com, Wine.com
Wine Style
The wine style of Sauvignon Blanc is usually Crisp, Light, and Dry or Medium Dry, with medium to high acidity. Some are made with a fuller body but light body style are made by most Winemakers.
Alcohol content for Sauvignon Blanc wines varies, from 11 - 13.5%.
Blending Grapes
Because Sauvignon Blanc is a thin wine, it is sometimes blended with Chardonnay wine, making the Sauvignon Blanc more bodied, and the Chardonnay more crisp and acidic.
It is commonly blended with Semillon and Muscadette to make white Bordeaux wines. The
Sweet wines of Bordeaux(Sauternes) also use Sauvignon Blanc grapes.
Wine Drinking Temperature
Sauvignon Blanc wine is usually served at fridge cold temperature. Put your Sauvignon Blanc in the fridge one hour before serve time.
