Chardonnay Wines

The Chardonnay grape is green, and this grape is planted in vineyards around the world; about 500,000 acres. It is the most planted grape in California. Almost all winemakers make a Chardonnay, and many make both an oaked and unoaked.

Chardonnay was made originally in France, known as an Old World wine region. New World winemakers tryed to make Chardonnay similar to the great Chardonnays of France, but they realized they could not compete with the terroir of France's distinct vineyards, so they instead oaked Chardonnay. This not only made the New World Chardonnay winemaking unique, but also produced new flavours in Chardonnay wines.

Wine Style-Types

Chardonnay wines are usually Dry or Medium Dry, with a Rich body or a Lighter Crisp body, however, Rich bodies are more common, especially in oaked Chardonnay.

Chardonnay is often blended in Sparklings with Pinot Noir and sometimes other blends like Chenin Blanc. The blend percentage is not exact, although 50/50 is common for Sparklings. Chardonnay is sometimes blended with Sauvignon Blanc. As Sauvignon Blanc is a thinner wine, Chardonnay gives it more body, and Sauvignon Blanc, being more acidic, adds crispness to the Chardonnay which is a less acidic wine.

Chardonnay wines can be oaked or unoaked. Oaked wines are quite popular in most Chardonnay wine making regions except for France. The wine is put in oak barrels, usually American or French oak, and left to age, which over time adds the oaky flavours. How long they are oaked depends on the winemaker and what oak flavours they want to produce. Usually a few months to 18 months or less is common for average priced wines.

The best Chardonnay from France is Chablis, characterized as: apple, citrus, orchard fruit, mineral and earthy. In France, some expensive Chablis Chardonnay wines can cost $600 or more. And, many can be bought for $20-$30-$40. Most Chardonnay from the Chablis region of France is not oaked.

Some of the best oaked and unoaked Chardonnays are from USA, California - Napa Valley and Sonoma, Oregon, New Zealand, and Cote de Beaune in France. Chile, Spain and Australia also have some good oaked and unoaked Chardonnay at great prices.

The alcohol content in Chardonnay wines can vary from 11 - 13.5%.

Flavours-Aromas

Oaked Chardonnay can have the aromas and flavours of unoaked Chardonnay and also oaky flavours like: vanilla, hazelnut, toasty, caramel, creamy, buttery, spice. Oaked Chardonnay tends to be more complex tasting. Unoaked Chardonnays are moreso fruity in character; with aromas and flavours like: pear, peach, apple, citrus, tropical, mineral and crisp.

Buying Chardonnay

The bottle label may not say if it is oaked or unoaked(although many do), nor the wine store counter label, however, the flavours and aromas on the store label is a good indicator if the wine is oaked; usually the oaked flavours and aromas are stated like: vanilla, hazelnut, caramel, buttery. If the store label only lists fruit flavours like: citrus, tropical, apple, crisp, then likely the Chardonnay is not oaked.

For an Oaked Chardonnay, a store label might read like this; citrus, hazelnut, buttery, or as: pineapple, citrus, creamy. It includes a fruit flavour and one or two of the oaked flavours.
