Tempranillo Wines

Tempranillo is a black grape which can be grown in hot and cool climates Spain is the largest wine producer in the World, with 85% of their wines being red wines. Their best known red varietal is Tempranillo. In Spain, red wine is known as Tinto, white wine known as Blanco, and rose wine known as Rosado. Spain makes over 250 million litres of wine yearly.

Wine Types/Style

Tempranillo is not often bottled as a single varietal. In Australia, Tempranillo is often blended with Grenache and Shiraz to make a red wine blend. In Portugal,(known as Tinta Roriz), it is blended in some of their Table and Port Wines in Douro Valley.

In Spain, Tempranillo is often blended with other Spanish wines; usually Garnacha Tinto,(Spanish for Grenache), Graciano, and Mazuelo. Typically, Tempranillo is at least 60% of the blend, with Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo adding to the blend. Garnacha adds body and alcohol to the red blend; Mazuelo add seasoning and flavours, and Graciano adds aromas.

Aging Tempranillo

Tempranillo wines are both aged and oak aged in American or Frenach Oak barrels to add flavour and aromas to the wine taste. The wine is aged at different time frames, both oak and non oak aging, and the wine's labelling name will show the type of aging the wine has had.

For basic aging and very little oak (less than 1 year) the bottle will simply say Tempranillo Rioja. If the wine has had oak aging for 1 year and non oak aging for 6 months to 1 year, the label will say Tempranillo Crianza. The word Crianza is what indicates the aging.

And, a Reserva labelled Tempranillo wine has 2 years non oak and 1 year oak aging. The Gran Reserva label, will have had 5 years of aging; 2 of which are in oak. Gran Reserva Tempranillo wines can be cellared for up to 30 years.

Flavours-Aromas

Red fruit, Cherry, Strawberry, Jammy, Dried Fruit, Vanilla, Earthy, Herb, Plum, Toasty, Mineral, Berry, Spice, Chocolat, are the flavours and aromas you can expect to taste in Tempranillo blend wines.

Wine Drinking Temperature

Like most red wines, Tempranillo should be served at 62 - 68 degrees F. If you put your bottle in the fridge take it out about 20 minutes before serving time.

And, to know how the cold temperature can affect your Tempranillo wine taste(or any red wine), taste the wine right from the fridge temperature, then let it warm to room temperature a tad. Once the wine has warmed a bit, taste it again, and you can now taste the flavours and tannins that you could not taste when the wine was colder.
