Wine Types

You can buy wine based on its style, aromas, flavours, and tasting notes. Wine bottle labels usually provide the grape name, and a general description of the wines style. By reading the liquor store counter labels and tasting notes online you can learn more about a particular wines character.

There are many different types and styles of wine. Red, White, and Sparkling are the most common types of wine. White wines can include Sparkling, Champagne, Moscato, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Riesling. Red wines can include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Malbec, Gamay, and Grenache. They are also Fortified and Dessert Wines. Dessert wines are usually quite sweet, and fortified wines usually have a spirit added to them like whisky or rye.

Blending Grapes

Within white and red wine types, you can have many blended wines. A good example of this is Sparkling wine; as many are made from a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. Grapes are blended most often to add flavour and to give a wine a more unique taste, which may not have been possible with just a single grape variety.

Another good example is Bordeaux red wines from France. They are always blended with merlot and cabernet sauvignon or cabernet franc, or both, and also sometimes with malbec. Merlot is usually the larger percentage of wine grape, like 70%.

A wine bottle label or store label may not always say if a wine is blended, but online wine websites can usually provide additional information. The reason why they don't always name all the blend types is that often one of blend grapes may only be a small percentage of the wines overall blend, and winemakers are not required by law to list all the smaller percentage blends.

Wine Style

A wine style can include its type of body and its sweetness. Typical bodies are Rich, Complex, Smooth, Medium, Full, Round, Light, Fruity, Crisp. Sweetness can include: Brut(XDry), Dry, Semi Dry, Semi Sweet, Sweet, Xtra Sweet.

Wine Drinking Temperature

Drinking wine at the proper temperature is imperative to tasting the best of your wines tannins, aromas, and flavours. Generally speaking, red wines are served at almost room temperature, white wines at fridge temperature, and sparkling wines and champagne are served ice cold.

Online Wine Resources

Finding information about a wine you want to try or heard was good to try is pretty easy to do for many wines. There are many websites about wine tasting and that provide tasting notes. In particular for tasting notes you want websites that provide tasting notes from recognized tasters usually by way of a wine score that usually includes a short description of their review of a particular wine.

Although a wine`s score isn`t the decisive factor for a wine`s drinkability, it usually is a good indicator of a wine`s overall character. But ultimately, it depends on your preferred taste. That is why a wine`s style, flavours, aromas, and tasting notes together are good to know.

In Canada, the LCBO.com (Liquor Control Board Ontario) has a comprehensive website with wine tasting notes, reviews, and wine scores for many of its wines. Like most wine buying websites you can browse by wine type and country. The LCBO.com has over 5000 wines to choose from. They ship to Ontario addresses only.

At the NSLC.com (Nova Scotia Liquor Commission) website, you can browse about 3000 wines by wine type, country, region, grape variety, flavours-aromas, and food pairings. Some items can be ordered online and delivered to a NSLC store for pickup.

Also in Canada, the MyWineCanada.com has over 4000 Canadian wines to browse, and you can order the wines online for delivery anywhere in Canada. The wine is actually shipped from the wine makers themselves. You can shop by price, grape type, wine scores, and wine award winners. This website showcases all wineries in Canada.

In the United States, the AstorWines.com website of New York, has wine reviews, wine categorized by country, regions, grape variety, wine producer, and staff picks.
They have over 200 searchable grape varieties, and about 4000 wines. They also have a good selection of sake, including sparkling sake. They deliver to addresses in New York City.

And, Wine.com, also has good wine reviews. They have about 13,000 wines to browse. You can search by wine bottle size/type, vintage with years, fine wines, wine scores and by price. They ship throughout the USA, and they have an Affiliate Program for their wine website. Put their wine banners, and advertising logos on your own website and you can make a commission from sales made from clicks from your website. The affiliate payout is monthly.

All these wine websites are great places to research wines for their tasting notes, character, and compare wine prices.
