Amino Acids: BCAAs
Amino acids are the building blocks for protein in our body. The body has many amino acids and 20 of these are called proteogenic amino acids. These 20 amino acids create about 40,000 distinct proteins found in our body.
Amino acids are categorized into three types: essential, non essential, and conditional. The proteogenic amino acids include the non essential and essential amino acids. The Non essential are synthesized in the body and are not mandatory in our diet.
The Essential amino acids are not produced by the body, therefore, we must get these nutrients from the food we eat. That is why it is important to eat a balanced diet so our body receives daily nourishment for these essential nutrients.
The essential amino acids are:
histidine,
isoleucine,
leucine,
lysine,
methionine,
phenylalanine,
threonine,
tryptophan,
valine.
Conditional amino acids are not essential. If we have an illness the body might not make enough of them;
however, we can get additional amino acids of this type from foods we eat.
BCAA
Branch chain amino acids are valine, isoleucine, leucine. Known as BCAAs, this are known as energy amino acids; and are used by professional athletes to sustain energy during peak training and competition.
By increasing BCAA during rigurous workouts they are able to postpone the fatigue associated with the extra serotonin produced by strenusous exercise.
Each of these amino acids have specific tasks: leucine goes to fats, valine to carbohydrates; and isoleucine is used for fat and carbs. BCAA are also useful in stimulating protein synthesis and reducing protein breakdown.
Also, the BCAAs, especially leucine, produce lots of energy, and are useful not only for athletes; but also conditions such as surgery, infection, fever, and anyone doing muscle training, and weight lifting.
