Rioja is the most productive wine region of Spain, with 140,000 acres of vineyards, mostly Tempranillo.
Its' yearly wine production is 250 million litres, and now has some 600 wineries.
Rioja wine region, is in the North of Spain, and along with its' famous Tempranillo, produces other red and white wines. Tempranillo are its' most exported wine. With a contrasting region of hills, valleys, and flatlands, Rioja has a unique viticulture.
The Rioja region is governed by the 'Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja', often short named as Rioja DOCa wines.
The capital of La Rioja, is the town of Logrono, although another town, Haro, is considered the wine capital of this area.
The terrain of the Rioja wine region spans 75 miles from the north-west to the south-east. This gives the region a diverse growing climate, topography and soil types, all contributing to its' wine style and quality.
What makes Rioja wine distinct is the oak aging effect. Most tempranillo wines are oak aged from one to several
years resulting in unique flavours and styles. Type of oak and age, as well as the time maturing in oak ultimately
determine the wine's characteristics.
Things to do in Rioja
La Rioja hosts the annual Battle of Wine festival in the village of Haro.
In Briones, the Vivanco Wine Museum is a popular tourist attraction - 30 minutes from Logrono.
The park; Parque Natural Sierra Cebollera, has adventures for everyone, with hiking, skiing, climbing,
and for the ultimate thrill seekers, paragliding - about 2 hours from Logrono by car.
The Logrono-Agoncillo Airport is the best way to get to Rioja by air.

Bodegas Tobelos was establlished in the late twentieth century by Ricardo Reinoso. The vineyards at this winery are located in the region of Sonsieera. Like many wineries in Rioja, the grapes are handpicked and sent to the winery.
The grapes are processed using alcoholic and malolactic fermentation.
Wines are aged for about two years, using French and European oak barrels.

Rioja alta. Origins date back to 1.077 A.C., then owned by the Santa Maria de herrera Monastery.
Vineyards include Viura, White Grenache, Sauvignon, Mazuelo. What is unique about Hacienda el Ternero; geographical location, and, their
altitude of almost 700 meters. Their grapes are harvested manually, carefully picked for high quality but limited productions. Fine grained French oak barrels are used to mature the wine.
